Machine Learning, Data Mining & Probabilistic Modeling

Machine learning, data mining and probabilistic modelling is a strong research field in Aalto, with long traditions starting from pattern recognition and neural computation, with current excellence including three Centers of Excellence of the Academy of Finland, and an enthusiastic faculty of both young and not-so-young-any-more professors. The field combines development of data analysis methods, theory of modelling, and applications ranging from health and medicine to a wide repertoire of data science topics. Professor Samuel Kaski is the representative of the research area.

The faculty covers the key topics of Bayesian inference, data mining, deep learning, graphical models, graph mining, kernel methods, neural networks, probabilistic modelling, and statistical machine learning. Strong applications include bioinformatics, computational astrophysics, computational biology, computational medicine, data science, human-computer interaction, information retrieval, information visualization, neuroinformatics and social-network analysis.

We host the Finnish Center of Excellence in Computational Inference Research COIN, and are a partner in Academy of Finland Center of Excellence Molecular Systems Immunology and Physiology Research (SyMMyS) and Research on Solar Long-Term Variability and Effects (ReSoLVE). We contribute to the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT.

For students, we run the Master's programmes in Machine Learning, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (Macadamia) and in Bioinformatics and Digital Health, which have seamless paths for excellent students to doctoral studies in our groups, with help by the Helsinki Doctoral Education Network in Information and Communications Technology (HICT). Industry pull is strong, start-ups and spin-offs are common, and EIT Digital help with entrepreneurship training.
