In the light of the history
The Department of Computer Science was established in the beginning of 2015 by a merger of three smaller departments. The three previous units were the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Department of Information and Computer Science and the Department of Media Technology.
The former Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department had long traditions in high impact, broad scale and cross-disciplinary applied and basic scientific research for instance in data communications software, software technology, software engineering and software business.
The focus of the research and teaching activity at the former Information and Computer Science (ICS) department was on advanced computational methods for modelling, analysing, and solving complex tasks in technology and science. The research covered fundamental computer science methods for the analysis of large and high-dimensional data sets, and for the modelling and design of complex software, networking and other computational systems.
The previous Department of Media Technology conducted research in all fields of digital media promoting the technical, substance and psychological knowledge required in building modern media products and systems.
Aalto University, and before that the Helsinki University of Technology, has educated a large number of Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral level professionals to demanding software, product development and research positions. In the new department this mission continues along with state-of-the-art research.
